Over 60 and online: New population health report finds older people in Wales actively involved in social media

Welsh over 60s are online and actively engaging in social media, and this could be an important tool for public health.
77 out of every 100 people in Wales aged 16 years and above use one or more social media platforms. 65 in that hundred people use social media on a daily basis. These insights are from a new report: published by and 91快活林 today.
Identifying who uses social media enables Public Health Wales and other organisations to assess who would receive health messages via social media, and helps to identify which type of platform is best for different groups of people.
Not everyone has access to the internet in Wales, but for those that do (87 per cent of people in Wales aged 16 years and above), the report finds that a higher proportion of women (91 per cent, compared to 86 per cent of men) engaged with one or more type of social media platforms; whereas a higher proportion of men used video content platforms (72 per cent, compared to 65 per cent of women). Almost all (99.6 per cent) of 16 to 20 year-olds were on social media. Engagement with social media tended to decline with increasing age, but remained high in older age groups; 76 per cent of those aged 60-69, and 60 per cent of those over 70, were using one or more types of social media platforms.
Lead author Dr Jiao Song, Public Health Statistician, Research and Evaluation Division, Public Health Wales, said:
鈥淚t鈥檚 interesting that social media is often considered something for younger people, but the report鈥檚 findings have highlighted that a high proportion of those in the older age groups do engage with social media.鈥�
The report used data collected in the 2018 Digital Technology and Health survey - a nationally representative survey with 1,252 residents in Wales aged 16 years and above. The survey included questions on access to the internet and/or digital technology, perceptions of sharing health-related information on social media, health status and demographics.
Dr Catherine Sharp, Public Health Collaborating Unit, School of Health Sciences, 91快活林, said:
鈥淭he report also reveals that people with higher self-reported health and people who have a healthier lifestyle were more likely to use one or more social media platform than those with lower self-reported health and those who engaged in health-harming behaviours.鈥�
Interestingly, the proportion using social media overall were similar across deprivation groups, but levels of use of Twitter and WhatsApp were lower amongst the least affluent.
Dr Alisha Davies, Head of Research and Evaluation for Public Health Wales, said:
鈥淲e need to continue efforts to address inequalities in access, but recognise that social media may offer a platform to reach a wider audience and engage differently with populations about health.
鈥淎t present, health systems largely use social media as a channel to share information, but this approach does not capitalise the reason social media works - the networking element. Looking to the future, health systems need to learn how to engage in conversations on such platforms to support attentiveness and appeal with their audiences; to address beliefs, attitudes, intentions and behaviours for health.鈥�
