Inclusive Bangor Scholarship 2024/25

*** Page to be updated for Bangor Inclusive Scholarship 2025/26. Call for applications to open in May 2025 ***

91 is a member of the Athena Swan charter and as such committed to gender equality and diversity, and to creating and promoting an inclusive culture for staff and students at all levels. While the career development of women in science remains a priority within the Athena Swan agenda at Bangor, we also recognise the underrepresentation of other groups in other areas and wish to celebrate and highlight those students who are contributing to change and diversity in their chosen field. The University’s Inclusive Bangor Scholarships are therefore to support students who are continuing their studies at Bangor in order to highlight and celebrate the diversity and inclusivity of our student population at 91, to ensure the student voice and experience is embedded in our EDI and Athena Swan agendas and to support the career development of our students contributing to these important agendas.

These Scholarships are for a masters degree (taught or by research) in any discipline. One scholarship per College will be awarded. Priority will be given to subject areas where there is a significant and consistent underrepresentation of certain groups at post-graduate student level at 91. We particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups in these subject areas. However, we also welcome applications for other subjects if the applicant is able to demonstrate an awareness of  “career pipeline” issues for women (or other groups) further down the academic career path in the chosen subject.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the scholarships the applicants must:

  • Be a current final year 91 UG student, or have graduated from a Bangor UG degree course in the last two years (2022, 2023)and
  • Have or are expected to achieved a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree, and
  • Have applied for, and been accepted on, a full-time or part-time masters degree (taught or by research) at 91 for entry in September 2024.

  • Welsh domiciled students should note that if awarded the Inclusive Bangor scholarship they will be listed as a sponsored student and will therefore not be considered for the HEFCW bursary.
  • International students should note that if awarded the Inclusive Bangor scholarship they will not be eligible for any other BU international awards

What criteria will applications be evaluated on?

  • Academic achievement
  • Applicants will need to demonstrate an awareness and understanding of EDI (equality, diversity and inclusivity) issues in their chosen field, reflecting on the EDI work being undertaken at Bangor, any contributions they have already made to this agenda and  how they see themselves contributing to this agenda as a post-graduate BU student.
  • The applicant’s desire and commitment to pursue a career in their chosen field and the extent to which the applicant can demonstrate how the scholarship would help to achieve her/his/their career aspiration.

What’s included?

  • Payment towards tuition fees for one-year taught or research postgraduate Masters or for two years if studying part-time. This will be capped at £9,500.

  • Students who accept the Inclusive Bangor scholarship will be expected to act as active representatives of the University, in particular regarding the University’s EDI and Athena Swan agendas.
