About This Course

The North Wales Medical School at 91Ώμ»ξΑΦ is delighted to offer this series of three short modules, each comprising up to three one-hour sessions introducing learners to key concepts and debates in leadership theory and practice in healthcare, and the education of health professionals.
Part one β Self Leadership: will introduce learners to methods they can use to reflect on their individual strengths as leaders and possible challenges that may limit their ability to engage in leadership roles. Learners will be encouraged to build on their strengths and address challenges to help develop their skills and confidence as leaders.
Part two β Leading Teams: will introduce theory that may inform approaches to leading teams in healthcare and provide an opportunity for learners to reflect on their practical experiences of leading teams.
Part three β Systems Leadership: will consider current thinking on leading healthcare systems. The session will introduce a model of collaborative leadership for health and social care systems. Concepts informing this model and its application to practice will be explored.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course learners will be able to:
- Identify individual strengths they can be bring to leadership roles, challenges they may face and strategies they can use to develop as leaders
- Discuss theories informing approaches to leading teams in healthcare and their applications to practice
- Describe a model of systems leadership in healthcare and how it might be applied in practice.
Benefits of attending
The course will introduce learners to key theories and concepts that inform approaches used by individuals, teams and systems in health care and the education of health professionals. It will also provide opportunities for learners to reflect on how they could develop their own capabilities as leaders either at individual, team or systems level.
Tutors
Dr Chris Subbe
Chris is a clinician working in Acute Medicine and a lecturer at 91Ώμ»ξΑΦ. He studied in Germany, where he also completed an MD in Respiratory Pathophysiology. Dr Subbe trained in England, Germany and Wales and complemented this with work for MΓ©decins Sans FrontiΓ¨res in Angola and fellowships in France and the US.
Chris's group published the first peer-reviewed paper on Early Warning Scores, and my research interest is the safety of the deteriorating patient. Dr Subbe completed an Improvement Science Fellowship with the Health Foundation to examine the contributions that patients could make to their own safety and host an annual conference on βPatient-Powered Safetyβ.
Professor Catherine OβKeeffe
Catherine has held a number of senior roles in postgraduate medical and health professions education. Her work has included leading faculty development and professional support initiatives, as well as research and teaching in higher education in this field. Catherine originally trained as a nurse and worked for many years internationally in health professions education before settling in the UK. Catherineβs teaching and research interests have focused on interprofes
sional education and professionalism. Recent awards include Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a UCL Faculty Education Award for Academic Support. Catherine is a Professor of Medical Education at North Wales Medical School, 91Ώμ»ξΑΦ, where she leads the MA in Medical & Health Professions Education and faculty development initiatives. Catherine is also an Emeritus Professor of Medical Education, UCL, where she continues to supervise doctoral students.
Dr Lorelei Jones
Lorelei is a medical anthropologist interested in organisation, knowledge, professions and care practices.
Her research is on the social organisation of healthcare, and her areas of expertise include:
- The quality and safety of hospital care
- Medical Leadership, innovation and organisational change
- Systems leadership, collaboration and integrated care
- Policy implementation and evaluation
Dr Jones' research is transdisciplinary and translational (theory into practice), working with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to develop healthcare professionals and services in North Wales and contribute to international learning.
Lorelei is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an executive member of the Society for Studies in Organising Healthcare, and a member of the Scientific Committee for the international conference on Organisational Behaviour in Health Care. Lorelei is on the editorial board of the Journal of Healthcare Organisation and Management and the International Journal of Health Governance.
Professor Fay Short
Fay Short is a Professor in the School of Human and Behavioural Sciences at 91Ώμ»ξΑΦ and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. She is also a qualified therapist and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Having previously worked as Director of Teaching and Learning for the College of Human Sciences, her current professional roles include Course Director for the MSc in Counselling and Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Employability at 91Ώμ»ξΑΦ. She is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and her teaching excellence has been recognised institutionally with a Bangor Teaching Fellow Award and nationally with a highly prestigious National Teaching Fellowship award.
Alongside her teaching, Fay supports academics and professionals across different fields following her training in Executive Coaching and Mentoring. She has also worked in the field of law following her Masters Degree in Law and Criminology, and her psychology of abuse training has been delivered to crime investigators and police officers across the UK.
In her therapeutic work, Fay is an accredited hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and advanced practitioner of REBT, and she has published a textbook exploring Core Approaches in Counselling and Psychotherapy. She has also published public-facing articles to educate others on key issues in psychology and counselling, such as her recent article on Listening Skills in The Conversation
